| (4/4/00,
10 a.m. ET) - Eighteen-year-old Hawaiian
singer Hoku
is the new kid on the block when it
comes to fair-haired teen female pop
idols. With successful artists such as Britney
Spears, Christina
Aguilera, Jessica
Simpson, and Mandy
Moore doing their thing, one
would think that finding the room for
yet another teen-female, pop vocalist
would be virtually impossible. Hoku is
hoping to stand out from the crowd with
her single "Another Dumb
Blonde," but at the same time she
is still a huge fan of both Spears and
Aguilera. In fact, the singer is such a
big fan that she tells LAUNCH the first
time she met Spears at a Nickelodeon
event, she almost wet her pants.
"I know that my music sounds a
lot different to me than it does to
other people, and to me I see it as
completely different from them you know?
But I have nothing but the utmost
respect for Britney and Christina,
because I mean I'm still this
star-struck little girl just looking at
them and going, 'Oh my gosh, that's so
awesome.' Like I met Britney at the Big
Help and I almost needed to change my
pants," she says. "I was like,
'Oh my gosh, it's Britney Spears!' I was
like, 'Ahhh!' I couldn't believe it -- I
shook her hand and gave her a hug and
took a picture. I'm like such a big
fan."
Hoku tells LAUNCH at any of the
up-and-coming female pop acts are going
to be compared to Spears and Aguilera
because they are incredibly successful
performers. "Well it's hard,
obviously being one of the 'pop girls'
under 18 or under 20. It's like you are
always kind of being compared and asked
questions a lot about Britney and
Christina," she says. "And
really it's kind of odd because not more
than a few months ago I was the one like
sitting there looking at them in the
magazine and going, 'Ooh, aah... I like
what she's wearing in that picture.' You
know I was like a little fan, just
buying their CDs off the shelves like
any other normal person."
Hoku's single "Another Dumb
Blonde" can be found on the Snow
Day soundtrack, and her
self-titled debut album is due to be
released May 2. The single is at Number
27 on the Billboard Hot 100.
